Out of Home advertising is a powerful medium not only for promoting products and services but also for public service messages. The US Department of State recently activated a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about passport renewal processing times, encouraging passport holders to renew their passports well ahead of their travel dates. This campaign highlights how the strategic use of OOH can effectively communicate crucial information to the public.
The campaign’s objective was to inform passport holders about the increased processing times and encourage early renewals, ideally 6 to 9 months before travel. Digital out of home (DOOH) advertising was employed across seven leading international airports in the US, including JFK, LAX, MIA, EWR, ORD, DCA, and IAD.
To enhance visibility, spectacular outdoor advertising was added in three major markets: Miami, New York City, and Los Angeles. EMC strategically chose these premium placements for their ability to convey prestige and sustainability, amplifying the campaign’s reach and impact.
Public service announcements are typically designed to convey important information effectively, often prioritizing clarity and straightforward messaging. However, this passport renewal campaign broke the mold by adopting a bright, colorful, and stylish approach. The creative content included high-quality imagery and motion that emphasized the urgency of early passport renewal, with phrases like “Check Your Expiration” and “Your Passport Just Expired!!!” alongside dynamic imagery of US Passports.
The visuals were crafted to be both informative and engaging, ensuring that the message resonated with a diverse audience. The messaging was also localized for contextual relevance by market, for example, “Hey New Yorkers…Get outta here!!!”.
The campaign delivered impressive results, significantly surpassing the planned impressions. Across all markets, the campaign achieved over 170 million impressions, representing a 91.5% increase above the planned target.
This impressive reach was further strengthened by the high visibility of the spectacular outdoor placements in key locations such as Times Square in New York, Figueroa in Los Angeles, and the MacArthur Causeway in Miami. These high-traffic areas provided exceptional amplification opportunities, ensuring that the message reached a wide audience.
The US Department of State’s passport renewal campaign is a testament to the effectiveness of strategic OOH advertising. By leveraging high-quality digital and spectacular placements in major airports and cities, the campaign not only achieved but exceeded its goals, delivering vital information to millions of travelers. This successful activation emphasizes EMC Outdoor’s capability to deliver impressive results through meticulous planning and execution.
